The Wrench is the first item you have in the game and one of your best friends on your many voyages, not only will it never betray you it also will always listen to anything you have to say. Sadly it will (probably) never answer you, but don't let that bother you. One of the many things the wrench is good for is bashing in your idiot crew's heads. Alternatively it can be used for fixing the hull of your mighty vessel and defending the guy who knows how to drive from giant crabs.

The Wrench is the second strongest repair tool in the game, second only to the Rivet Gun, although it doesn't deal that much damage (7 Points), it is a good allrounder for when you need repair power but still don't want to be totally defenseless.
